An accident to your horse: does the waiting period fall away?

After an accident, the Barmenia horse surgery policy waives the three-month waiting period that would otherwise apply. What matters is that the operation demonstrably traces back to the accident, and that the accident meets the definition in the policy conditions.

Immediate cover: when does the waiting period fall away?

In animal health insurance, waiting periods protect everyone in the pool against conditions that already exist. Under Barmenia's conditions (AVB Pferde-OP-Kosten), illness carries a general waiting period of three months, while specific procedures such as abdominal surgery for colic carry a shortened period of five days.

When a horse suffers an acute injury from an unforeseen event, though, every minute counts. Under clause 2.2.4.1, the waiting period falls away entirely for insured events caused by an accident. Cover responds from the first day of the contract, provided the operation needed is exclusively and demonstrably attributable to the accident.

Barmenia's waiting periods at a glance

  • General illness: standard waiting period of 3 months from the agreed start of cover.
  • Abdominal surgery (colic): shortened waiting period of 5 days.
  • Special indications (joint chips, OCD and similar): special waiting periods of 6 to 12 months.
  • Surgery after an accident: 0 days, once the accident is evidenced.

Because the deadline drops away immediately, horse and owner are financially protected against a sudden injury from the moment the contract is signed. For the standard deadlines, see our guide to Barmenia's waiting periods.

What counts as an accident for insurance purposes?

Not every sudden health problem meets the legal criteria of an accident. Clause 2.1.1.1.c defines an accident as an event acting suddenly on the insured animal's body from outside and causing physical injury. The decisive test is therefore the external influence.

Typical examples are falls in the field, kick injuries from other horses in the herd, collisions with obstacles or accidents while the horse is being transported. Movements the horse makes itself with no external trigger — taking a bad step at an ordinary trot, say — generally count in insurance terms as illness instead.

A special case: harm from poisoned bait

The conditions make one important point clear on toxic substances: harm caused by eating poisoned bait is expressly classed by Barmenia as an accident. Where poisoning makes surgery necessary, the waiting period falls away in the same way.

  • An accident under the conditions: a kick injury from another horse, a fall in the horsebox, cuts from paddock fencing, eating toxic bait.
  • Not an accident (illness): age-related arthritis, chronic airway problems, tendon conditions developing gradually with no external trauma.

Typical equine accidents and what the vet charges

The risk of an unforeseen accident is a constant around horses. According to the German society for orthopaedic and trauma sports medicine, roughly 40,000 riding accidents needing medical treatment happen in Germany each year. Alongside the rider, the animal often suffers serious trauma too.

Surgery after an accident usually means comprehensive diagnostics, anaesthesia and a stay at the clinic. Operating on a splint bone fracture in Germany typically costs 1,000 to 4,000 euros. Surveys put the average annual vet's bill for a horse at 2,104 euros in any case, and emergency surgery after an accident overshoots that budget many times over without cover.

Getting the evidence right so the claim is paid

For the insurer to release the benefit without a waiting period, the need for treatment has to be demonstrably attributable to the accident. Complete, precise documentation by the treating vet is the key to that.

Step by step when a claim arises

  1. Initial veterinary care: tell the vet immediately how the accident happened, so it goes into the clinical record as the trigger.
  2. Veterinary report: make sure the acute diagnosis and the external cause — a kick in the paddock, a fall — are described in detail.
  3. Imaging: X-rays, ultrasound or endoscopy document the fresh trauma and serve as objective evidence.
  4. Submission to the insurer: send the vet's invoice together with the surgical report and the findings to the insurer without delay.

Clean documentation heads off queries and speeds up settlement. For more on what is reimbursable, see our overview of the Barmenia horse surgery policy.

Exclusions and the traps to watch

The waiting period falling away after an accident is not a blank cheque for every treatment. Where a pre-existing condition is merely aggravated by a minor incident, insurers often treat that as illness rather than a fresh accident.

Nor does cover respond where clinically relevant symptoms or diagnoses already existed before cover started or during the standard waiting period. In such cases the condition and its consequences stay outside cover.

Key exclusions under clause 3.2

  • Routine and preventive treatment with no direct connection to the accident surgery.
  • Transport costs for the horse, and the vet's travel costs.
  • Dietary and supplementary feed, even where its use is medically recommended.

Reading the conditions closely prevents unpleasant surprises at reimbursement stage. Our article on the exclusions in horse surgery insurance analyses every restriction in depth.

Cover tailored to your horse

An accident arrives without warning and, without the right cover, can bring heavy costs with it. Specialist horse surgery insurance is therefore an important precaution for any owner who wants necessary surgery secured at all times.

Barmenia's policies reimburse up to twice the rate in the scale of fees for veterinary surgeons (GOT) and leave you free to choose the clinic. Our guide to GOT rate reimbursement looks at how the fees are billed. As a digital marketplace, nextsure makes it easy to compare tailored cover transparently and buy it entirely online.

  • Immediate cover after an accident, with no general waiting period, from day one.
  • Cover for veterinarily necessary operations under general and standing anaesthesia.
  • Free choice of treating vet and equine clinic.
  • Transparent comparison and digital handling through nextsure.

Frequently asked questions

Does the waiting period always fall away after an accident?

Yes, provided the veterinary treatment is exclusively and demonstrably attributable to the accident, the usual general waiting period of three months falls away. For accident surgery the horse is covered from day one.

What does the insurer define as an accident?

An accident is a sudden event acting on the horse's body from outside and causing physical injury. Harm caused by a horse inadvertently eating poisoned bait also counts contractually as an accident.

How do I prove the accident to the insurer?

The accident has to be documented by the treating vet. The diagnosis and the surgical report must confirm clearly that the injury and the operation it required are the direct result of an accident and not of a pre-existing condition.

What might an equine accident cost?

Surgical costs vary widely with the severity of the injury. An open fracture quickly runs to treatment costs of up to 4,000 euros, while the annual vet's bill averages around 2,104 euros.

Are routine examinations after an accident covered?

No. General routine, preventive or voluntary examinations are excluded. Cover extends only to the pre-operative examination, the veterinarily necessary operation itself and the immediate aftercare.
