What is covered?

  • The veterinary-medically necessary surgery of the insured horse due to illness or accident (a surgical procedure under general anesthesia/sedation/local anesthesia/"standing sedation" in which skin or tissue is cut beyond a mere puncture).
  • Also covered under anesthesia/sedation/local anesthesia: wound care by suturing/stapling, tooth extractions (including wolf teeth), and root canal treatments.
  • The pre-surgical examination (diagnosis, including case history, clinical and special examinations such as X-ray, endoscopy, biopsy, lab work) – only if the surgery is actually performed.
  • Aftercare following the surgery, including alternative/complementary methods (acupuncture, homeopathy, physiotherapy, laser therapy, magnetic field therapy, neural therapy), provided these are recognized in veterinary science and billed under the GOT (German veterinary fee schedule).
  • Under Premium cover, additionally up to 5 physiotherapy sessions (max. 60 min. each) after the agreed aftercare period has ended.
  • Emergency veterinary service (nights/weekends/holidays): reimbursed up to 4× the GOT rate plus an emergency-service fee, provided this is documented in the policy.
  • Once per horse: surgery costs directly related to a birth-related emergency caesarean section.
  • Covered with limitations (scope per the policy): joint surgery for isolated shadows/OC/OCD/chips/Birkeland fractures, imaging procedures (X-ray, CT, MRI), inpatient stays/regenerative therapies as part of aftercare.
  • Territorial scope: Germany; worldwide for up to 12 months during a temporary stay abroad.
  • Direct billing with the vet/veterinary clinic possible upon explicit instruction.

Which tariffs and prices are available?

  • Per the product page (as of July 2026), three tariff levels are offered: Basis (from €22.68/month), Top (from €31.49/month), and Premium (from €51.44/month). The policy conditions (AVB) document itself distinguishes only between "Standard cover" (comprising Basis and Top) and "Premium cover" (with extended aftercare benefits and a waiver of the insurer's termination right, see below) for the tariff-specific additional benefits.
  • Maximum benefit per surgery (per the product page, as of July 2026): Basis up to €2,500, Top and Premium with no annual cap. For joint surgery due to isolated chips: Basis up to €1,500, Top and Premium unlimited.
  • Reimbursement rate per the product page (as of July 2026): generally up to 2× the rate under the German veterinary fee schedule (GOT); the 4× GOT rate for emergency veterinary service applies, per the product page, only under the Premium tariff.
  • Deductible per the product page (as of July 2026) selectable between €0, €250, €500, and €1,000 per claim (not specified in the AVB document itself).
  • Premiums are monthly, payable quarterly/semi-annually/annually as an option; the insurer may review/adjust premiums at least annually (§ 11).

  • Dietary/supplementary feed as well as preventive vitamin/mineral preparations.
  • Health certificates, expert opinions, medical information, findings, and vet letters.

Which deductibles and waiting periods apply?

  • Deductible or reduced reimbursement rate: individually agreed, see the policy (amounts per the product page, see the Tariffs/Prices section above).
  • Age limit per the product page (as of July 2026): Horses can be insured up to a maximum age of 19 at contract inception.

  • Special 12-month waiting period: Joint surgery for isolated shadows, OC, OCD, Birkeland fractures, chips.
  • Special 6-month waiting period: Castration due to gynecological/andrological/oncological conditions.
  • No waiting period for accidents (provided treatment is demonstrably accident-related).
  • Waiting periods are waived or credited where a comparable prior policy continues seamlessly.

What else is important?

  • Invoice submission: without delay, at the latest 1 month after treatment ends, with owner/animal data (life/chip number), diagnosis, GOT item, and date.
  • Termination: can be terminated without notice at the end of the original contract term; from the 1st renewal year the policyholder may terminate daily; the insurer may terminate with 3 months' notice as of the renewal date.
  • Premium-cover termination waiver: If the horse was at most 7 years old at contract start, Barmenia waives its ordinary right of termination from the 7th policy year onward (with exceptions: termination of the entire product line, breach of the duty of disclosure, breach of obligations, or default of payment).
  • Priority in case of multiple insurance: a claim under another policy generally takes precedence; however, Barmenia will advance payment if notified of the case.
  • Jurisdiction/law: German law; the insurance ombudsman and BaFin serve as complaints bodies.
  • Since the merger with Gothaer, the product page has been hosted at barmeniagothaer.de; barmenia.de redirects there (as of July 2026).
