A brief moment of inattention while manoeuvring and your new trailer worth €3,000 is damaged. In Luxembourg, the right insurance is crucial, as the legal requirements differ significantly from those in Germany, with compulsory insurance for every trailer.

The topic in brief and concise terms

In Luxembourg, every trailer requires its own third-party liability insurance and official registration, regardless of weight.

The statutory liability insurance only covers damage to third parties, not theft, vandalism or self-caused accidents involving your own trailer.

Fully comprehensive insurance is essential for new, expensive or leased trailers, as it covers the replacement value and protects against significant financial loss.

Understanding statutory insurance obligations in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, every trailer is subject to a separate insurance requirement, a regulation that differs from that in Germany. From the very first kilogram of permissible gross weight, you need separate motor third-party liability insurance. This statutory requirement applies to all types of trailers, from a small DIY-store trailer to a large horse trailer. The insurance is linked to its own registration with the National Company for Road Traffic (SNCA) and its own number plate. Driving without valid insurance cover is an offence and is punished with fines as well as the deduction of four points. This regulation ensures that even a parked trailer is insured if it should break loose and cause damage. Liability insurance is therefore the absolute basic cover, but it only covers a fraction of the real risks.

Analysing risks beyond liability

The compulsory motor third-party liability insurance covers only damage you cause to others. Damage to your own trailer, for example as a result of an accident you caused yourself, is not covered. A typical scenario is a manoeuvring error that results in repairs costing over €1,000. Even in the event of theft, liability insurance offers no protection; the financial loss corresponds to the trailer’s full replacement value. Vandalism is another risk to which liability cover does not apply, such as a slashed tarpaulin on an €800 trailer. Without comprehensive insurance, you bear these costs in full yourself. The limitations of liability cover often only become clear when a claim arises and it is already too late.

Maximise comprehensive cover

The fully comprehensive insurance offers the most extensive protection for your trailer and includes all the benefits of partial cover. It protects you against a wide range of risks that go far beyond third-party liability. A direct comparison of the benefits provides a clear overview:

  • Third-party liability: Covers only damage to third-party property caused by your trailer.

  • Partial cover: Covers damage caused by fire, theft, glass breakage and natural events such as storms or hail.

  • Fully comprehensive: Includes all partial cover benefits and also covers damage caused by vandalism and accidents you caused yourself.

A stolen boat trailer worth EUR 5,000 is fully reimbursed by fully comprehensive cover. This comprehensive protection is particularly important for new, leased or expensive specialist trailers such as commercial boat trailers. The cover extends to the entire vehicle, including permanently installed parts.

Create a cost-benefit analysis for comprehensive cover

The decision in favour of fully comprehensive insurance for a car trailer in Luxembourg is an economic trade-off. The annual premium for a trailer worth EUR 4,000 can, for example, be around EUR 150. This amount is set against a potential total loss of EUR 4,000 in the event of theft or a serious accident. The investment in comprehensive cover therefore amounts to less than four per cent of the trailer's value per year. This protection is particularly worthwhile for new trailers, as depreciation is highest in the first two years. For older trailers with a value of under EUR 1,000, partial comprehensive insurance can often represent a sufficient compromise. You should therefore weigh the current value of your trailer against the annual insurance costs.

Handle registration and insurance correctly

The process for insuring your trailer in Luxembourg is clearly structured and begins with the licensing authority. Correct handling in just a few steps provides you with cover from the outset. First, you must register the trailer with the SNCA (Société Nationale de Circulation Automobile) in order to obtain a registration plate and the registration certificate. The following steps are required:

  1. Application for an insurance confirmation (equivalent to an eVB number) from an insurer authorised in Luxembourg.

  2. Submission of the vehicle documents (certificate of conformity) and proof of ownership to the SNCA.

  3. Payment of the applicable fees, which amount to around 50 euros.

  4. Attachment of the registration plate to the trailer after successful registration.

Our expert tip: Check in advance with your insurer whether new-for-old compensation is included in the policy for the first twelve or 24 months. This protects you against depreciation in the event of a total loss shortly after purchase. The entire car & mobility sector benefits from careful planning.

Ensure cross-border protection

A trailer registered and insured in Luxembourg enjoys insurance cover throughout the European Union. Thanks to international agreements, your Luxembourg policy is also valid in Germany and other EU countries. The International Insurance Card (formerly the Green Card) serves as proof, but within the EU it is usually no longer mandatory to carry. When travelling abroad, you should nevertheless take a copy of your insurance documents with you. Any claim abroad will be settled in accordance with the terms of your Luxembourg contract, ensuring straightforward handling with a single point of contact. For longer stays or special transport, additional foreign travel cover may be worthwhile. This ensures that your trailer is optimally protected even outside Luxembourg.
