A sudden, serious illness can throw even the best wedding plans into disarray and cause significant financial losses. Wedding insurance protects your investment if you have to cancel the celebration. Find out how to prepare yourself and your budget for the worst-case scenario.
The topic in brief and concise terms
A typical wedding in Germany costs over €15,000, with deposits often lost if it is cancelled.
Wedding insurance covers cancellation costs if the wedding is called off due to an unexpected, serious illness of the wedding couple, the witnesses or close relatives.
Pre-existing conditions known at the time the contract is concluded, as well as mental illnesses, are often excluded from insurance cover.
Quantify the financial risk of a wedding cancellation
The average cost of a wedding in Germany is around 15,000 euros. One in four couples even invests more than 20,000 euros in the celebrations. Many service providers, such as venues or caterers, require deposits of up to fifty per cent, which are often retained if the booking is cancelled. A sudden cancellation due to illness can therefore mean a financial loss of several thousand euros. This sum often does not even cover the planning services already provided. This financial upfront investment requires targeted protection so that you are not left out of pocket in an emergency.
Key features of wedding insurance in case of illness
A wedding cancellation insurance works similarly to travel cancellation insurance for your celebration. It covers the cancellation costs contractually owed if the wedding has to be called off for an insured reason. For example, if a celebration with a budget of €20,000 is cancelled because the bride has an accident, the insurance reimburses the cancellation fees incurred, perhaps €16,000. Cover applies in the event of an unexpected, serious illness. The exact definition is crucial for the benefit. This takes the financial burden off the couple’s shoulders, allowing them to focus on recovery.
Definition of the insured persons in the event of illness
The insurance cover does not extend only to the bride and groom themselves. A cancellation is also insured if a so-called at-risk person becomes seriously ill and the event becomes unreasonable to proceed with as a result. This group generally includes the closest family members. An exact list of the insured persons is crucial in the event of a claim.
The wedding couple (the bride and groom)
The parents, step-parents and grandparents
The biological children, adopted children and stepchildren
The siblings of the bride and groom
The witnesses
The illness must be so serious that it prevents attendance or the celebration itself. The exact assessment of this condition is a standard process in the event of a claim.
Distinction: When an illness is considered an insured event
The key factor for the benefit is the diagnosis of an “unexpected serious illness”, which must be proven by a medical certificate. A flu that occurs a week before the wedding may already count as such a reason. However, there are clear exclusions that couples should be aware of. Here are four typical cases in which there is no insurance cover:
Pre-existing conditions already known when the policy is taken out.
Mental health conditions are often covered only under certain conditions.
Mild, foreseeable illnesses such as a simple cold.
Cancelling because of “cold feet” or a breakup.
Our expert tip: Before taking out the policy, clarify how the insurer assesses chronic conditions that unexpectedly worsen. This transparency prevents later misunderstandings in the event of a claim.
The claims process: a step-by-step guide for the worst-case scenario
If an insured event occurs, swift action is required to minimise the loss. Inform all service providers immediately of the cancellation in order to keep cancellation charges as low as possible. Report the claim to your insurer straight away; in many cases, a deadline of only three working days applies. For smooth processing, the insurer requires complete documentation. This includes the medical certificate, all contracts, invoices and the final cancellation invoices from the service providers. A good event cancellation insurance is characterised by a transparent and swift claims settlement process. Careful documentation of all steps significantly speeds up the payout.
Optimal contract structuring and extended protection options
The sum insured should always correspond to the total cost of the wedding to avoid underinsurance. The premium for this usually amounts to only one to two per cent of the total costs, which means an investment of 200 euros for a 15,000-euro celebration. In addition to cancellation due to illness, many policies also cover other risks such as the insolvency of the venue or the failure of important service providers. The loss of the rings shortly before the ceremony can also be insured, similar to jewellery insurance. A close look at the policy terms reveals the full extent of the cover. FAQ
When is the best time to take out wedding insurance?
Take out the insurance as early as possible, ideally as soon as you have booked the first major items such as the venue or the caterer. Most policies can be taken out up to 30 days before the wedding date.
What happens if only the celebration, but not the wedding ceremony, is cancelled?
The insurance reimburses the cancellation costs for the cancelled parts. So if you get married at the registry office but have to postpone the subsequent celebration due to illness, the costs for the celebration (venue, catering, DJ etc.) will be covered.
Is there an excess?
That depends on the chosen plan. There are both policies without an excess and those where, in the event of a claim, you pay a fixed amount or a percentage share yourself, for example ten per cent of the claim amount.
Does the insurance also pay if a service provider fails?
Many wedding insurance policies offer cover in the event of insolvency or the failure to appear of important service providers (e.g. photographer, venue). This is often part of premium plans or can be selected as an optional add-on.
Is a worsening of a chronic illness covered?
An unexpected and acute worsening of an existing chronic illness can be insured if it was considered stable at the time the contract was concluded. This must be assessed on a case-by-case basis and should be communicated transparently.
What if the bride becomes pregnant and has to cancel the wedding?
A normally progressing pregnancy is not an insured event. However, if unexpected, serious pregnancy complications occur that make a celebration impossible, insurance cover will generally apply.
