An accident can change your life in an instant and lead to high costs. ADAC Accident Insurance provides important financial protection here, but do you know all the details about benefits and the basis for calculation?
The topic in brief and concise terms
Statutory accident insurance covers only around twenty per cent of all accidents; a private accident insurance policy such as ADAC Accident Insurance is therefore important for comprehensive protection.
The amount of disability benefit depends mainly on the sum insured, the degree of disability (scale of benefits) and the progression.
Contributions to private accident insurance are tax-deductible up to certain maximum limits.
Quick overview: What you need to know about accident insurance
Statutory accident insurance only covers accidents at work, at school or on the direct route there. This means that around eighty per cent of all accidents that happen in your free time or at home are not covered by statutory insurance. A private accident insurance policy, such as ADAC accident insurance, closes this gap and offers worldwide cover, 24 hours a day. The core benefit is the disability benefit, a lump-sum payment in the event of permanent impairment. The amount of this benefit depends on the agreed insured sum, the degree of disability according to the body-part schedule and any possible progression.
Understanding the scope of cover: What does ADAC accident insurance cover?
The ADAC accident insurance provides financial benefits following an accident, which vary depending on the tariff (e.g. Basic or Exclusive). Core benefits include disability benefit, a lump-sum payment in the event of permanent physical impairment. The full disability benefit is often paid from as little as eighty per cent disability. Other possible benefits include hospital daily allowance, recovery benefit or costs for vehicle modifications. Rescue costs can also be reimbursed up to the agreed amount. An overview of the insurance benefits is essential. The exact conditions and benefit amounts are set out in the insurance policy and the terms and conditions of insurance. Payment is usually made within two weeks of the claim being established.
Calculating disability benefits: How payments are made up
The calculation of the disability benefit is a key aspect of every private accident insurance policy. Three main factors determine the amount of the payout: the agreed disability sum insured (base sum), the assessed degree of disability and the chosen progression scale. Ideally, the sum insured for disability should be five to six times gross annual income, but at least EUR 100,000. The degree of disability is determined using the limb table, which specifies which percentage is applied in the event of loss or functional impairment of certain parts of the body. A progression scale ensures that benefits rise disproportionately at higher degrees of disability; for example, a 500% progression can mean five times the base sum in the event of total disability. A cost comparison for accident insurance policies helps with the choice. A calculation example: with a base sum of EUR 100,000 and a degree of disability of sixty per cent without progression, EUR 60,000 would be paid out. With a 500% progression, according to the progression scale, this could be EUR 180,000.
Practical example of benefit calculation
Let us assume that an insured person has taken out ADAC accident insurance with a base disability sum insured of EUR 100,000 and a progression of 350 per cent. After an accident, a degree of disability of twenty per cent is established according to the limb table due to loss of the thumb. Without progression, the benefit would be EUR 20,000 (twenty per cent of EUR 100,000). With a progression of 350 per cent, the benefit would be calculated according to the relevant scale, which often provides for no increase or only a small increase at low degrees of disability. If the degree of disability rises to fifty per cent, for example, the benefit with 350 per cent progression could already amount to one hundred per cent of the base sum (EUR 100,000). The exact scale is crucial and can be found in the respective insurance contract. This illustrates how important understanding the comparability of accident insurance policies is.
Limb schedule in detail: assessment of functional impairments
The disability scale is a table in the insurance contract that determines how the degree of disability is assessed in the event of loss of, or complete loss of function in, limbs or sensory organs. Each insurer defines its own disability scale, although there are recommendations from the German Insurance Association (GDV). For example, the loss of an arm is often assessed at seventy per cent, a thumb at twenty per cent and an index finger at ten per cent. Higher values in the insurer’s disability scale mean a higher benefit in the event of a claim. In the case of partial loss or partial loss of function, the corresponding proportion of the disability scale value is used; if an arm is impaired in function to one-tenth of its capacity, this would result in a degree of disability of seven per cent, based on a disability scale value of seventy per cent for the whole arm. If several limbs are affected, the degrees of disability are added together, but only up to a maximum of one hundred per cent. It is important to understand whether accident insurance is compulsory or represents voluntary but sensible cover.
Loss of an arm: often seventy per cent disability.
Loss of a hand: frequently fifty-five per cent disability.
Loss of a thumb: typically twenty per cent disability.
Loss of an eye: usually fifty per cent disability.
Loss of hearing in one ear: often thirty per cent disability.
These values can vary depending on the insurer and tariff, so a close look at the terms and conditions of the ADAC accident insurance is essential.
Expert insights: Tax aspects and recent rulings
Contributions to private accident insurance can generally be deducted from tax as other retirement provision expenses. For employees and civil servants, the annual maximum is €1,900, and for self-employed persons €2,800, provided these amounts have not already been used up by health and long-term care insurance contributions. An accident insurance policy that covers both private and occupational risks may, in certain circumstances, be claimed pro rata as employment expenses (for the occupational portion) and special expenses (for the private portion). Parents can also declare contributions for a children's accident insurance in their tax return. Capital benefits from accident insurance, such as disability benefits, are usually tax-free; pension payments, by contrast, must be taxed on the taxable portion of the annuity. A recent ruling by the Heilbronn Social Court in December 2024 (case no. S 2 U 426 /24) showed that Long Covid symptoms can also be recognised as a consequence of an occupational disease, underlining the importance of clear medical evidence in the event of a claim, even though this has no direct connection to private accident insurance. Our expert tip: Keep all proof of contributions carefully and, if necessary, seek advice from a tax adviser on the best way to claim them.
Important aspects of the tax treatment are:
Proof of contributions paid by means of a certificate from the insurer.
Separation of the occupational and private portions in the case of mixed use.
Observance of the maximum amounts for retirement provision expenses (€1,900 or €2,800).
Tax exemption for capital benefits versus tax liability for the taxable portion of annuities.
Understanding whether you need accident insurance is the first step towards the right cover.
Optimal cover: choosing the right sum insured and progression
Choosing the right sum insured is crucial for cover tailored to your needs with ADAC accident insurance. Experts recommend a disability sum that is at least two to three times the gross annual salary; Stiftung Warentest advises at least EUR 100,000. A higher base sum always has a positive effect on the disability benefit, even for lower degrees of disability. Progression significantly increases the benefit in the event of severe disabilities. A progression of at least 350 per cent is often considered sensible. Our expert tip: A higher base sum is often more important than an extremely high progression, as progression only takes effect from a degree of disability of usually twenty-five per cent. Analyse your individual needs carefully to avoid underinsurance or overinsurance. An accident insurance policy for adults should take these factors into account. Also consider the tax deductibility.
In addition to disability benefits, many ADAC accident insurance tariffs offer other useful supplementary components. These may include, for example, daily hospital allowance, recovery benefit, death benefits or rooming-in costs for children. Some tariffs also provide cover for cosmetic surgery or rescue costs. ADAC Unfallschutz Exklusiv, for example, was rated “good” (1.8) by Stiftung Warentest in October 2018. Our expert tip: Compare not only the price, but especially the detailed provisions in the insurance terms and conditions, such as the definition of an accident, exclusions (e.g. alcohol clause) and the level of the benefit scale. Make sure that accidents caused by your own movement or greater physical exertion are also covered. A detailed look at ADAC accident insurance is advisable here.

FAQ
Which accidents are covered by ADAC accident insurance?
ADAC accident insurance generally covers accidents worldwide and around the clock, i.e. both in working life and during leisure time and in the home, unlike statutory accident insurance.
What is the difference between statutory and private accident insurance, such as that offered by ADAC?
Statutory accident insurance primarily covers accidents at work, school and on the way to and from work or school, as well as occupational diseases. Private ADAC accident insurance fills the gap for accidents during leisure activities and in the home, and often offers more individually tailored benefit packages.
How is disability determined after an accident?
Disability is usually determined by a doctor and converted into a degree of disability based on the body-part scale in the insurance policy. This degree, together with the sum insured and progression, determines the amount of the benefit.
Is personal accident insurance for children worth it?
Yes, accident insurance for children is sensible, as statutory accident insurance only applies in nursery school, at school and on the direct routes there. However, most accidents involving children happen during leisure time.
What happens if I already had health limitations before the accident?
If pre-existing conditions or impairments have contributed to the accident or its consequences, the insurer may reduce the benefit. Good policies waive any reduction up to a certain contributory share (e.g. under seventy-five per cent).
How quickly does ADAC accident insurance pay out in the event of a claim?
Once the entitlement to benefits and its scope have been established and all supporting documents are available, ADAC Versicherung usually pays the amount within two weeks.
