Calculating insurance for a quad often seems complex. Many factors influence the premium, from the type of vehicle to the group of drivers. Discover how to calculate the costs transparently and find the right cover for your driving enjoyment.

The topic in brief and concise terms

Quad insurance is legally required (third-party liability), and the cost depends on many factors such as vehicle performance, the driver's age, no-claims class and region.

In addition to third-party liability, partial comprehensive cover (theft, damage caused by natural events) and fully comprehensive cover (including damage caused by your own fault) can extend protection and are often recommended.

Savings can be achieved through seasonal licence plates, voluntary excess, approved repair shops and registration for agricultural or forestry use.

Understanding the basics: These factors determine your quad bike insurance premium

Calculating your quad insurance is not rocket science, but it is based on a wide range of criteria. Insurers assess the risk individually in order to determine a fair premium. Even your quad’s engine power, often stated in kilowatts (kW) or cubic centimetres (ccm) of engine capacity, plays a significant role; more powerful models with, for example, over 50 kW are usually more expensive to insure.

Your age and driving experience are also crucial. Young riders under 23 or 25 often pay higher premiums, as statistically there is a greater risk of accidents. Your no-claims bonus class (SF class), which rewards years without claims, can reduce the premium by up to 80 per cent. The regional class of your registration district, which reflects accident and theft frequency, also influences the costs. Last but not least, the level of cover selected – third-party liability, partial comprehensive cover for your quad, or fully comprehensive cover – has a direct impact on the price.

Third-party liability, partial cover, fully comprehensive cover: choosing the right level of cover

The legally required motor vehicle liability insurance is the absolute minimum for every quad in Germany. It covers personal injury, property damage and financial losses that you cause to others with your quad, usually up to a sum of 100 million euros.

For damage to your own vehicle, you need comprehensive insurance. Partial comprehensive cover, for example, steps in in the event of theft, fire, storm or hail damage, as well as collisions with wildlife. Many insurers already cover damage caused by animals of all kinds here. A fully comprehensive insurance policy for your quad goes even further and also covers self-inflicted accident damage to your own vehicle as well as vandalism damage. This is particularly worth considering for new or high-value quads with a value of around 5,000 euros. Choosing the right level of cover is an important step in calculating your quad insurance correctly.

Costs in concrete terms: calculation examples and potential savings with quad insurance

The annual cost of quad third-party liability insurance can range between €50 and €150. Partial comprehensive insurance can increase the premium to between €85 and over €280, depending on factors such as the rider’s age. For fully comprehensive insurance, you should expect to pay from around €180 per year.

  • Seasonal registration: If you only use your quad for a few months of the year, for example from March to October, you can save up to 60 per cent on premiums with seasonal registration. Comprehensive insurance cover often also applies outside the season when the vehicle is parked.

  • Excess: An excess in comprehensive insurance, usually between €150 and €500, noticeably lowers the annual premium.

  • Approved repair shops: Some tariffs offer a discount of up to 20 per cent if you agree to have damage repaired at the insurer’s partner workshops.

  • Annual payment: Paying annually is often a few per cent cheaper than monthly or quarterly instalments.

  • Restrict the driver group: The fewer drivers there are, the cheaper it is. There are often discounts if only the policyholder or people over 25 drive.

  • Garage: A parking space in a garage can reduce the risk of theft and therefore have a positive effect on the premium.

It is always worth comparing different providers carefully, as the price differences can be significant. These factors help you calculate your individual quad insurance.

Special case LoF approval: optimise quad insurance for agricultural and forestry use

An interesting way to influence the cost of quad insurance is to register it as an agricultural or forestry tractor (LoF). This option is not available to every quad owner, as proof of agricultural or forestry land use is required. If you meet the requirements, such as a tow bar and certain lighting equipment, the insurance for an LoF quad can often work out cheaper.

The main advantage often lies in lower tax rates and insurance premiums. Some insurers classify LoF quads in more favourable vehicle categories, similar to tractors. However, it is important to check carefully whether the insurer recognises the LoF registration accordingly and whether, for example, a no-claims discount from a car can be transferred. Not every policy for agricultural tractors is automatically the best choice for an LoF quad. A detailed comparison of the terms and conditions is particularly important here in order to calculate the best insurance for your quad and make full use of the benefits of LoF registration.

Expert-level depth: legal aspects and advanced design tips

The legal basis for quad insurance in Germany is the Compulsory Insurance Act (PflVG). This requires motor third-party liability insurance for all motor vehicles on public roads. The minimum coverage sums are set by law, but are often below the €100 million lump sum recommended by experts for personal injury, property damage and financial loss. A ruling by the Brandenburg Higher Regional Court (case no. 11 U 2 8/14) illustrates the liability risks, even though it involved an unregistered quad on private property – underlining the need for adequate cover.

Our expert tip: when choosing a tariff, don’t just focus on the price. Check the policy terms carefully for exclusions or reductions in cover, for example in cases of gross negligence. Another point is the so-called „Mallorca policy“: if you are driving a rental quad abroad, this add-on cover can step in if the foreign insurer’s cover is insufficient. For quads with a top speed of up to 45 km/h and an engine capacity of up to 50 cc, an insurance plate is often sufficient, similar to mopeds. These are usually cheaper, but they also only provide basic cover. A precise understanding of these details is crucial in order to calculate the insurance for your quad optimally and avoid unpleasant surprises in the event of a claim.

No-claims classes and regional classes: How they affect your premium

A key factor in calculating your quad insurance is the no-claims class (SF class). For each accident-free year, you move up to a higher SF class, which leads to a significant discount on your insurance premium. The scale often ranges from SF class 0 (new drivers, highest premium rate) to SF class 35 or higher, which can allow discounts of up to eighty per cent. A claim, on the other hand, leads to a downgrading. You can find more information in our SF class table.

The regional class is redefined annually by the Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft (GDV) for each registration district in Germany. It reflects the claims record (frequency and amount of liability and comprehensive claims) of the respective region. If you live in a district with a low rating (e.g. few accidents and thefts), you benefit from lower premiums. An overview is often provided by the type class table, even though this is primarily intended for cars, the principle is similar. These two classification systems are therefore key factors when you calculate your quad insurance.

Additional modules: Useful additions to your quad insurance cover

Additional modules: Useful additions to your quad insurance cover

In addition to the core cover of third-party liability and comprehensive insurance, many insurers offer useful optional add-ons to tailor your quad’s protection. A breakdown assistance cover, for example, provides Europe-wide help in the event of breakdowns, accidents or theft, including cover for towing or a replacement car, often from as little as €10 a year. This can be especially reassuring on longer trips or when on holiday.

Driver protection insurance is also worth considering. It provides cover for personal injuries to the driver following an accident caused by the driver alone or with shared fault, where no one else is liable, and can cover loss of earnings or compensation for pain and suffering. For leased or finance-purchased quads, GAP cover (Guaranteed Asset Protection) can be important. In the event of a total loss or theft, it closes the financial gap between the replacement value and the higher outstanding book value from the finance agreement, which can amount to several thousand euros. Choosing these add-ons affects the final calculation of your quad insurance and should be tailored to your individual needs.

FAQ

What documents do I need to take out quad insurance?

Usually, you will need the registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document), your personal details (name, address, date of birth) and your bank details. For the online calculation, details about the quad (make, model, power, first registration) and usage (annual mileage, drivers) are often also required.

Can I transfer my no-claims discount from my car to the quad?

Many insurers allow the transfer of the no-claims class from a car to a quad bike, especially if the quad bike is insured as a second vehicle. However, the exact conditions can vary, so it is advisable to check with the insurer.

What should be considered when taking out quad insurance with LoF approval?

With an LoF registration (agricultural or forestry tractor), insurance can be cheaper. However, appropriate proof of use must be provided and the quad must meet certain technical requirements. Not all insurers offer special tariffs or conditions for this.

Does my quad insurance also apply abroad?

Motor third-party liability insurance generally applies within the geographical boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories that are part of the territorial scope of the European Union (often shown on the Green Card). Different provisions may apply to comprehensive cover benefits. Foreign claims cover or a Mallorca policy can extend the cover.

How fast can I drive after taking out quad insurance?

As soon as you have received the electronic insurance confirmation (eVB number) from your insurer and the quad has been registered with the registration authority (or the insurance plate has been attached), you are covered by insurance and may drive.

What happens to my quad insurance if I sell the quad?

When the quad is sold, the insurance policy usually transfers to the buyer. You should notify the insurer and the licensing authority of the sale immediately. The buyer has a special right to cancel, and the insurer can also terminate the contract.
