What is covered?
- Pet health insurance for the animal named in the policy – protects against the financial consequences of medical costs resulting from an insured event.
- Insured event (B.7.1): surgeries including preparatory examination/diagnosis, medical treatments and follow-up treatments – reimbursed up to the maximum rate agreed in the policy under the German veterinary fee schedule (GOT).
- Also covered: medication (except agents against endo- and ectoparasites) as well as accommodation and boarding costs during clinic stays.
- Special conditions and surgeries (B.7.2) – including associated diagnostics and pre-/post-treatment, but subject to their own (longer) 6-month waiting period:
a. Surgeries resulting from egg binding (a condition in female birds and reptiles in which a formed egg becomes stuck in the oviduct or cloaca) – relevant for parrots/birds and reptiles. b. Surgeries resulting from otitis (ear infection: interna, media or externa). c. Surgeries resulting from malocclusion (misalignment of the jaw or of one or more teeth) – common in small mammals (rabbits, guinea pigs).
- Additionally co-insured benefits (B.7.3): supplementary feed, dietary feed and vitamin supplements administered as an inpatient following an insured treatment/surgery; tele-diagnostics and tele-consultation by a vet; medical treatments/surgeries arising from illnesses or congenital malformations not known before the contract began (after a 6-month waiting period).
- Optional if agreed in the policy (B.7.4): vaccinations and parasite treatments; preventive blood checks; preventive/therapeutic behavioural therapy; surgical castration/sterilisation; physiotherapy (12 weeks after surgery/treatment); veterinary osteopathy (12 weeks); alternative-practitioner treatments, acupuncture, homeopathy (12 weeks); veterinary emergency service following a mandatory surgery or a direct consequence of an accident.
- Supplementary dental cover, if agreed (B.7.5): tooth extractions; fillings, dentures, tooth corrections; preventive cleanings, tartar removal, tooth polishing as well as tooth and beak trimming.
Which tariffs and sums are available?
- Policy conditions: TKKT-02-2506, as of 06.2025 ("Cleos Welt small pet health insurance").
- Maximum benefit is capped per insurance year at the sum insured agreed in the policy (B.3) – specific amounts appear only in the individual policy, not in the policy conditions (AVB) themselves.
- If the sum insured is increased during the year, reimbursements already recognised for the current year are offset against it.
- Age adjustment (B.10): annual premium increase of 3% from the start of the following insurance year (main due date), to reflect the animal's increasing age; does not trigger a special right of termination.
- Premium adjustment (D.2): annual review of claims/cost trends; if a premium increase results from recalculation, the customer has a special right of termination.
- Three tariffs (per the product page, as of July 2026):
- Basis: from €6.99/month, up to €3,000 reimbursement per year, 3x GOT rate.
- Standard: from €13.99/month, up to €5,000 reimbursement per year, 3x GOT rate.
- Rundum (marked "Popular"): from €17.49/month, unlimited reimbursement per year, 4x GOT rate.
- Deductible per the product page: all three tariffs bookable with a €0 deductible.
- Insured species per the product page: rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, ferrets, chinchillas and degus (small mammals); parrots, finches, chickens and pigeons (birds); tortoises/turtles, geckos, chameleons, monitor lizards, agamas and snakes (reptiles).
- Termination per the product page: cancellable monthly with 14 days' notice; free choice of any licensed vet or veterinary clinic.
What is not covered?
- Intentionally caused damage (cover remains in place for negligence/gross negligence).
- Pre-existing conditions: illnesses known before the contract began, as well as examinations, treatments or surgeries already begun or veterinarily recommended beforehand.
- Benefits within the respective waiting period, and consequences of defects/illnesses known or occurring before the waiting period ends.
- Preventive or voluntary examinations/procedures unrelated to illness, accident or surgery (except as part of additionally insured benefits).
- Consequences of illnesses/accidents occurring after the contract ends; likewise examinations/treatments during a break in cover.
- Detailed exclusion list B.8.8 (excerpt, species-relevant): dental work performed to maintain breed/show standards; treatments performed by the policyholder themselves or by a spouse/partner/child/parent; travel, waiting, visiting and transport costs; distemper/rabies in ferrets and myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) in rabbits, unless vaccination cover can be proven via an international vaccination record; pregnancy examinations/breeding-hygiene measures; castration/sterilisation (unless separately agreed under B.7.4); in mammals, routine dental work (unless supplementary dental cover is agreed); chip identification; damage caused by Encephalitozoon cuniculi (EC), unless the animal tested negative no more than one year before the insurance began.
- Cover restrictions include: war, earthquake and flood, epidemics and pandemics, nuclear energy, civil unrest/sovereign acts.
Which deductibles and waiting periods apply?
- Deductible (B.4): if agreed, as stated in the policy; deducted per invoice submission (the sum of all invoices submitted on one calendar day).
- General waiting period (B.6.1): 30 days from the start of cover.
- Waiting period for special conditions and surgeries (B.6.2): 6 months from the start of cover (including associated diagnostics and pre-/post-treatment) – also applies to illnesses or congenital malformations not known before the contract began.
- No waiting period (B.6.3): insured events resulting from an accident (e.g. a traffic accident) – exception: special conditions/surgeries (B.7.2) and congenital malformations remain subject to the waiting period.
- Waiting period with prior insurance (B.6.4): if there was an immediately preceding contract with comparable cover (including with Cleos Welt itself), its term is credited toward the waiting period, provided the prior contract was not terminated by the previous insurer.
What else is important?
- Territorial scope (B.9): cover applies within the Federal Republic of Germany; abroad, cover applies for a maximum of 12 months to the extent of the GOT rates applicable in Germany.
- Obligations (C): hazard removal and loss mitigation; cooperation in establishing the claim; carrying out vet-recommended vaccination and preventive measures (example given in the policy conditions (AVB): distemper/rabies in ferrets, myxomatosis/RHD in rabbits); species-appropriate husbandry – for rabbits explicitly per § 35 of the German Animal Welfare Livestock Farming Ordinance (TierSchNutztV).
- Advance-payment guarantee (B.11) and update guarantee (B.12): if it is unclear when a claim arose in time, the insurer pays in advance; improvements to the policy conditions apply automatically to existing contracts at no extra premium.
- Premium payment (D): the first premium is due immediately after cover starts; payment period may be monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual, generally by direct debit.
- Contract term/termination (F): automatically renews for a further year if the contract has run for at least 1 year and is not terminated; the policyholder may give ordinary notice at any time with 14 days' notice to the desired date, the insurer with 3 months' notice before expiry; right of termination after a claim; pro-rata premium on early contract termination.
- Continuation on death (H): on the policyholder's death the contract passes to the heirs, who may terminate it with 14 days' notice.
- Multiple insurance (I): if several contracts for the same risk are unknowingly concluded, the later contract may be cancelled or the sum reduced accordingly.
