What is covered?
- Pet health insurance for the animal named in the policy — protects against the financial consequences of illness-related costs following an insured event; applies to the animal category "small mammal" per B.2.
- Insured event (B.7.1): surgeries including the preparatory examination/diagnosis, medical treatment and post-treatment — reimbursed up to the agreed maximum GOT rate. In addition: medication (except agents against endo-/ectoparasites) as well as accommodation/boarding costs during clinic stays.
- Special condition with its own (6-month) waiting period, practically relevant for rabbits (B.7.2 c): surgery resulting from malocclusion (misalignment of the jaw or one or more teeth) — one of the most common surgical indications in rabbits due to their lifelong tooth growth.
- Egg binding (B.7.2 a) concerns female birds/reptiles and does not apply to rabbits; otitis (B.7.2 b) can occur across species.
- Also covered (B.7.3): supplementary feed, dietary feed and vitamin preparations administered during inpatient care following an insured treatment/surgery; tele-diagnostics/tele-consultation by a vet; medical treatment/surgery due to illnesses or congenital malformations not known before the contract was taken out (after a 6-month waiting period).
- Optional by agreement (B.7.4): vaccinations and antiparasitic agents; prophylactic blood checks; behavioral therapy; neutering/spaying; physiotherapy/osteopathy/alternative-practitioner services (12 weeks); veterinary emergency service.
- Dental supplementary cover, if agreed (B.7.5): tooth extractions, fillings, dentures, tooth correction, prophylactic teeth cleaning/tartar removal/polishing and tooth trimming — particularly relevant for rabbits due to their continuous tooth growth, supplementing the malocclusion surgery included in basic cover (B.7.2 c).
Which tariffs and sums are available?
- Policy conditions: TKKT-02-2506, dated 06.2025 — identical for all animal categories insurable under B.2 (small mammals, birds, reptiles).
- Maximum benefit per insurance year is capped at the sum insured individually agreed in the policy (B.3); specific amounts appear only in the policy, not in the policy conditions (AVB).
- Age-based adjustment (B.10): annual premium increase of 3% from the start of the following insurance year; this does not create a special right of cancellation.
- Three tariffs for rabbits (per the product page, as of: July 2026):
- Basis: from €34.99/month, up to €3,000 reimbursement per year, 3x GOT rate.
- Standard: from €48.99/month, up to €5,000 reimbursement per year, 3x GOT rate.
- Rundum: from €62.99/month, unlimited reimbursement per year, 4x GOT rate, incl. €200 annual prevention budget.
- Deductible per the product page: €0 across all three tariffs.
- Dental supplementary cover (optional module, per the product page): from €20.00/month, €500 annually for tooth extractions/corrections plus a €200 dental-prevention budget.
What is not covered?
- Intentionally caused damage; pre-existing conditions already known before contract conclusion; benefits within the waiting period.
- Preventive/voluntary examinations unrelated to illness, accident or surgery.
- Rabbit-specific exclusions (B.8.8 n and u):
- Examination, diagnosis and treatment for myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) in rabbits — unless proof of vaccination can be shown via an international vaccination record.
- Damage caused by Encephalitozoon cuniculi (EC) — unless the animal tested negative for EC no more than one year before the insurance start date.
- Also relevant from the exclusion list B.8.8: routine dental services in mammals, unless dental supplementary cover is agreed; dental services performed to maintain breeding/breed standard (cosmetic); treatment carried out by the policyholder or family members themselves; travel, waiting, visiting and transport costs; pregnancy examinations and breeding-hygiene measures; neutering/spaying (unless separately agreed); microchip identification.
- Coverage restrictions include: war, earthquake and flood, epidemics and pandemics.
Which deductibles and waiting periods apply?
- Deductible (B.4): if agreed, per the policy, deducted per invoice submission (calendar day).
- General waiting period (B.6.1): 30 days from the insurance start date.
- Waiting period for malocclusion as a special condition (B.6.2): 6 months from the insurance start date, including related diagnostics and pre-/post-treatment.
- No waiting period (B.6.3): accidents — excluding special conditions/surgeries and congenital malformations, which remain subject to a waiting period.
- Prior insurance (B.6.4): the term of an immediately preceding contract with comparable scope of cover is credited towards the waiting period.
- EC test deadline: proof of a negative Encephalitozoon cuniculi test may be no more than one year old at the insurance start date, otherwise exclusion B.8.8 u applies.
What else is important?
- Territorial scope (B.9): Federal Republic of Germany; abroad, coverage is provided for a maximum of 12 months to the extent of the German GOT.
- Obligations (C): carry out vet-recommended vaccination and preventive-care measures — the AVB explicitly cites for rabbits: vaccinations against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) (C.4).
- Species-appropriate husbandry (C.5): for rabbits, the policyholder expressly complies with the requirements of § 35 TierSchNutztV (German Farm Animal Welfare Ordinance) — the only husbandry obligation in the AVB concretized by statutory reference for a specific animal species.
- Cancellation: 14 days' notice to the end of the month by the policyholder; 3 months by the insurer at contract expiry; automatic renewal by one year without timely cancellation, given a minimum term of 1 year.
- Premium payment: due immediately after the insurance start date; monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual payment possible, generally by direct debit.
