What is covered?

  • Pet health insurance for the animal named in the policy – protects against the financial consequences of medical costs resulting from an insured event; applies to the species "small mammals" under B.2.
  • Insured event (B.7.1): surgeries including preparatory examination/diagnosis, medical treatments and follow-up treatments – reimbursed up to the agreed GOT maximum rate. Additionally: medication (except agents against endo-/ectoparasites) as well as accommodation/boarding costs during clinic stays.
  • Special condition with its own (6-month) waiting period, practically relevant for guinea pigs (B.7.2 c): surgeries resulting from malocclusion (misalignment of the jaw or of one or more teeth) – for rodents such as guinea pigs, one of the most common reasons for surgery, due to their lifelong tooth growth.
  • Egg binding (B.7.2 a) affects female birds/reptiles and is not relevant for guinea pigs; otitis (B.7.2 b) can occur across species.
  • Additionally co-insured (B.7.3): supplementary feed, dietary feed and vitamin supplements administered as an inpatient following an insured treatment/surgery; tele-diagnostics/tele-consultation by a vet; medical treatments/surgeries arising from illnesses or congenital malformations not known before the contract began (after a 6-month waiting period).
  • Optional if agreed (B.7.4): vaccinations and parasite treatments; preventive blood checks; behavioural therapy; castration/sterilisation; physiotherapy/osteopathy/alternative-practitioner services (12 weeks); veterinary emergency service.
  • Supplementary dental cover, if agreed (B.7.5): tooth extractions, fillings, dentures, tooth corrections, preventive cleanings/tartar removal/tooth polishing and tooth trimming – particularly relevant for guinea pigs due to their continuous tooth growth, supplementing the malocclusion surgery already included in the base cover (B.7.2 c).

Which tariffs and sums are available?

  • Policy conditions: TKKT-02-2506, as of 06.2025 – identical for all species insurable under B.2 (small mammals, birds, reptiles).
  • Maximum benefit per insurance year is capped at the sum insured individually agreed in the policy (B.3); specific amounts appear only in the policy, not in the policy conditions (AVB).
  • Age adjustment (B.10): annual premium increase of 3% from the start of the following insurance year; does not trigger a special right of termination.
  • Three tariffs for guinea pigs (per the product page, as of July 2026):
    • Basis: from €20.99/month, up to €3,000 reimbursement per year, 3x GOT rate.
    • Standard: from €31.49/month, up to €5,000 reimbursement per year, 3x GOT rate.
    • Rundum (marked "Popular"): from €34.99/month, unlimited reimbursement per year, 4x GOT rate, per the product page up to 100% cost coverage, €0 deductible.
  • Supplementary dental cover (optional add-on, per the product page): from €15.00/month, €500 annually for tooth extractions/corrections plus €200 for dental prophylaxis.
  • Per the product page, over 50,000 insured animals ("pet parents") at Cleo.

What is not covered?

  • Intentionally caused damage; pre-existing conditions already known before the contract began; benefits within the waiting period.
  • Preventive/voluntary examinations unrelated to illness, accident or surgery.
  • From exclusion list B.8.8, relevant across species: routine dental work in mammals (tooth extractions, fillings, corrections, dentures, tooth trimming), unless supplementary dental cover is agreed; dental work performed to maintain breed/show standards (cosmetic); treatments performed by the policyholder themselves or family members; travel, waiting, visiting and transport costs; pregnancy examinations and breeding-hygiene measures; castration/sterilisation (unless separately agreed); chip identification.
  • The vaccination exclusions named in the policy conditions (AVB) (distemper/rabies in ferrets, myxomatosis/RHD in rabbits; Encephalitozoon cuniculi in rabbits, B.8.8 n/u) do not apply to guinea pigs.
  • Cover restrictions include: war, earthquake and flood, epidemics and pandemics.

Which deductibles and waiting periods apply?

  • Deductible (B.4): if agreed, per the policy, deducted per invoice submission (calendar day).
  • General waiting period (B.6.1): 30 days from the start of cover.
  • Waiting period for malocclusion as a special condition (B.6.2): 6 months from the start of cover, including associated diagnostics and pre-/post-treatment.
  • No waiting period (B.6.3): accidents – except special conditions/surgeries and congenital malformations, which remain subject to the waiting period.
  • Prior insurance (B.6.4): the term of an immediately preceding contract with comparable cover is credited toward the waiting period.

What else is important?

  • Territorial scope (B.9): Federal Republic of Germany; abroad, a maximum of 12 months' cover to the extent of German GOT rates.
  • Obligations (C): carry out vet-recommended vaccination and preventive measures (the illnesses named as examples in the policy conditions (AVB) – distemper/rabies/myxomatosis/RHD – concern ferrets/rabbits, not guinea pigs); species-appropriate husbandry (appropriate to the species and its behaviour, including housing, temperature, and rest periods depending on species).
  • Termination: 14 days' notice to the end of the month by the policyholder, 3 months by the insurer at contract expiry; automatic renewal for one year without timely termination once the contract has run for at least 1 year.
  • Premium payment: due immediately after cover starts; monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual payment possible, generally by direct debit.
